Guts and Glitz is a vibrant, multimedia collage following G.G., a young woman navigating the isolating fractures of abuse and invasive small-town gossip. As her world splinters, an avant-garde ecosystem emerges to piece her back together: fragments of community, a protective cousin, a misunderstood reunion between two sisters, and a playful ancestral ghost. Operating as living, glamorous characters, animals and the natural elements–dirt, water, fire, and wind–assert their power against a lingering background abyss of disconnection. Interlocking a ten-year archive of personal documentaries, pop-culture debris, animation, and spectral satirical vignettes, this experimental work positions joy and community resilience as radical, interconnected acts of resistance.
Director's Note: The cinematic language of Guts and Glitz was forged across more than a decade of multimedia practice. Embracing the accessibility of modern cameras and the fast-paced nature of social media scrolling, the production involved meticulous layering. By treating these disparate media artifacts as physical building blocks, the assembly of the film structurally mirrors the very themes of trauma and rebuilding that G.G. experiences on screen. Rather than viewing devastation as a dead end, this collage framework allows audiences to witness how life regenerates through sheer proximity. By elevating the natural elements and animal life into active cinematic subjects, the film deconstructs the boundary between human grief and environmental persistence. It directly critiques the voyeuristic gaze of media culture and repurposes reality television tropes to expose how social expectations police women's lives. Ultimately, the film stands as an exercise in sovereign storytelling, an intimate, non-linear archive designed to honor the messy, complex, and triumphant process of reclaiming one's space in a loud world.
