Fox Maxy is a film director based in San Diego. She is Payómkawichum and Iipay Kumeyaay, from the Mesa Grande Band of Mission Indians. Her work explores themes of kinship, emotional well-being, nightlife, fashion, and environmental advocacy - using cinema as a lens to illuminate both intimate and collective experiences of contemporary life.
Her debut feature film, Gush, premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Her second feature, Guts and Glitz, is currently streaming on MUBI. In 2024, Maxy was awarded the Chanel Next Prize. Last year, she also conceptualized and led her Mental Wellness Film Workshop at The Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School.
Her short films include F1ghting Looks Different 2 Me Now, Blood Materials, Maat, and San Diego. Her work has screened internationally at museums and festivals including the Museum of Modern Art, Sundance, Toronto International Film Festival, and LACMA. Maat received the Ammodo Tiger Short Award at the 2021 International Film Festival Rotterdam.
Maxy brings a multidisciplinary background in fashion, design, and visual storytelling. She studied Communication Design, Advertising, and Art History at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Her professional background includes producing shows at New York and Paris Fashion Weeks and contributing to CR Fashion Book, founded by Carine Roitfeld. With over eight years in design, she has worked with Pascal Dangin at Box Studios and KiDS, developed research-driven campaigns, and produced clothing for Bianca Chandon and Call Me 917.
In addition to her creative work, Maxy serves as a Native Cultural Monitor, helping protect cultural sites during development projects. She is currently writing narrative scripts and laying the foundation for a career in commercial directing.
